AWS cost optimization tools,
compared plainly.
Most AWS tools tell you what you spent. Fewer help you stop paying for dev and test resources that sit idle every night and weekend. Here is how the main options fit together.
The short version
Seeing cost and acting on cost are different jobs.
AWS Cost Explorer and Budgets are good at reporting. Savings Plans and Reserved Instances lower the price of what must run. Neither turns off what nobody is using.
Non-production environments often run 168 hours a week while people use them for about 45. A scheduling tool closes that gap. That is the job CloudValet is built for.
How to choose
Four questions before you pick a tool.
Start with your estate, not a feature list.
- How much of your spend is non-production, and who owns it?
- Do you need a UI your teams will use, or is a script enough?
- Can you grant a scoped cross-account role instead of long-lived keys?
- Do you also need a clear read of who can access what in IAM?

What CloudValet does
Weekly schedules
A 168-hour grid per team and time zone. Resources park when the team is offline.
Opt-in by tag
Only resources tagged cloudvalet:managed are touched. Production is excluded by default.
Snooze with expiry
Working late? Snooze a schedule for a few hours. It resumes on its own.
Preview first
See what will stop and the projected saving before approving anything.
Plain-English IAM
See who can do what across users, roles and policies, and what access goes unused.
No agents
A scoped cross-account role with an external ID. Read first, act later.
Questions
Straight answers.
What is the best AWS cost optimization tool?
It depends on the job. Use Cost Explorer to see spend, Savings Plans for steady workloads, and a scheduler like CloudValet to park non-production resources outside working hours.
Is AWS Instance Scheduler enough?
For a single team comfortable with CloudFormation and tag syntax, it can be. Teams that want a UI, snoozes, previews and multi-account views usually outgrow it.
Does CloudValet need an agent?
No. CloudValet uses a scoped cross-account IAM role. The read-only role comes first; the parking role is optional and separate.
How much can scheduling save?
It depends on your estate. A resource needed 45 hours a week is idle for the other 123, so the runtime opportunity is large. We show projections, not promises.
